Morocco
Morocco, leader in West Africa
Morocco, like South Africa, strongly differentiates itself from other emerging African economies and is far ahead of these other African countries. With a GDP per capita five times higher than the African average, Morocco can count itself as a country with a lower middle class and relatively low poverty. Strong industrial sectors such as mining, agriculture and fruit - despite the drought, manufacturing and tourism provide sustained growth. In the absence of prospects for further economic integration with the EU, Morocco is also very much focusing on neighbouring West Africa in recent years with strong presence and investment.
Morocco is investing heavily in infrastructure, roads and railways and is also looking to tap its huge potential in solar energy and subsequently green hydrogen. The political system is the stable with strong focus on economy and industrial development. The business climate is favourable and offers reasonable opportunities to young people and talents, albeit that - as elsewhere in Africa - finding start-up capital is not easy. However, the Moroccan diaspora in Europe remains very loyal to the country of origin, providing 15% of the country's income.
