Tanzania
Tanzania, East African power in the making
Tanzania seems well on its way to becoming the biggest economic player in East Africa. After years of very modest growth due to a legacy of hampering government intervention and lack of focus on private entrepreneurship, it is now quietly paving the way for local talent and initiatives. Tanzania's potential is huge: agriculture, horticulture, tourism, mining, manufacturing, construction, infrastructure and transport - also as an export port for the landlocked emerging countries of Zambia, Rwanda and Uganda, ... opportunities are not lacking.
Concerning the economy, better electricity supply, road infrastructure and irrigation are now priorities and will lay the foundation for economic growth. Inflation seems under control and a lower middle class is growing in the regional centres. The share of agriculture in GDP fell from 80% to 50% in the last quarter century, that of industrial production and services rose from 15% to 35%. With Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro and Africa's best wildlife parks, tourism could be very influential in determining Tanzania's future.
