Empowerment of small business owners in South-Africa
Coordination between municipality and recyclers as a tool for empowerment
In the municipality of Witzenberg, located in the Western Cape of South Africa, an ambitious project is running in which the municipality cooperates with small business owners. The business owners, all of them recyclers, are responsible for the collection and processing of waste in collaboration with the municipality. Exchange and Witzenberg entered into a partnership to further support and strengthen the recyclers.
Exchange expert Anne Vandeputte went to Witzenberg to facilitate workshops on coordination between recyclers and the municipality. Setting up a coordinated approach between the 2 parties must empower the recyclers and professionalize the policy. With her many years of experience as sector coordinator in waste management at Exchange, Anne and coach Bert are looking at how the municipality of Essen, the Flemish twin brother of Witzenberg, can create added value within the program!
