Food safety on the menu
Achieving a food safety certificate in Malawi is far from evident. Only a handful of companies are certified throughout the country. Developing an appropriate policy, fine-tuning the correct procedures and implementing them is a major challenge. Safety expert in the food industry Eliane Waterschoot is experienced in applying food safety systems in developing countries and assisted Satemwa in setting up a HACCP system (health hazard and critical control points).
During her stay in Thyolo in July 2018, she worked with the Satemwa HACCP team on the definition and control of critical safety issues, the design of a management system, the development of procedures and their implementation in practice. GMP training (good manufacturing practices) was also on the program for the employees and the setup of internal audits and self-evaluations was an essential part of the collaboration.
Step by step, Satemwa is preparing to adapt its production to the demands of the European market. Cheers to certified Satemwa tea!
